How to make Strawberry Crumbles
So what is Strawberry Crunch (aka strawberry shortcake crumbles) made of? Actually, this strawberry crumble topping is so simple to make. I tried a bunch of different versions, but these were my top two favorites: a no bake strawberry crunch topping made with golden Oreos, and a homemade version with flour and butter. They both only have 3 ingredients and whip up in under 10 minutes.
Strawberry Shortcake Crumble with Oreos:
Instructions: Crush up the Oreos into small breadcrumb size pieces using either a food processor or a gallon size freezer bag with a rolling pin. I prefer using the rolling pin as I can make sure there are still some uneven, larger pieces of cookies. Add the strawberry jello powder and melted butter. Stir until everything is well combined. Lay out on a piece of foil or parchment to “dry” for about ten minutes and you’re done.
Pros:
- No baking.
- The cookies give it a nice crunch.
- It looks like the traditional strawberry short cake crumbs you see on the store-bought ice cream bars.
Cons:
- Sweeter to taste as it has both Oreos and jello powder.
- The Oreos have a strong flavor, so you’ll need more of the strawberry jello to ensure it tastes like strawberries (meaning more sugar).
- You need to have golden Oreos in the house.
Strawberry Crunch Topping Made with Flour:
Instructions: Using a pastry cutter, cut the chilled, diced butter into the flour until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs or the pieces of butter are about the size of peas. Add the strawberry jello powder and stir. Line a baking sheet with foil, spread the mixture into a thin layer on the baking sheet. Bake at 350 for 10 minutes.
Pros:
- You can control the amount of sugar.
- You can really taste the flavor of strawberries—even with only a few teaspoons of jello powder.
- Cheapest option. You probably have flour and butter at home and jello packets are less than $1.
Cons:
- You must bake this version because you are using raw flour.
- This crumble is not as crunchy as the other.
Honestly, you can’t go wrong with either version. I’d recommend that if you are simply using these strawberry short cake crumbs for an ice cream topping, to use the Oreo version. If you are using for a cake topping or frosting enhancer, the flour version is probably best as it will bring out more flavor and will still to the frosting/cake better.
Now you have everything you need to make this delicious crunch topping at home with this homemade strawberry shortcake crumble recipe. Enjoy!
