Growing up, these Hello Dolly Bars were a household favorite. They only use a few ingredients and take about 30 minutes or so to make. Plus, you can make these your own by adding your own flavors to the mix.
This is my grandma’s recipe and we’d make it every year at Christmas — but honestly, they are good ANY time of the year.
Fun fact: The name “Hello Dolly” comes from the play of the same name that was popular in the 1960s when this dessert became famous. You may also have heard them called 7 Layer Bars or Magic Bars. Whatever you call them, they are delicious.
Tips for Making Hello Dollies
Typically, these bars have 7 “layers” (and by layers they really mean ingredients). I’ve taken my grandma’s classic recipe and added my own flair to it. The classic recipe includes butterscotch chips and nuts, but my recipe swaps those for Butterfinger baking bits. This gives these bars a bit of a caramel/toffee flavor which is delicious. Feel free to swap out the Butterfinger for the traditional butterscotch pieces or nuts.
Once you’ve combined your melted butter and graham crackers, press them into the bottom of a 13×9 pan (I’ve also used 9×9 and it works fine). Then, you simply build your layers — chocolate chips, Butterfinger pieces or any other thing you are using — just be sure to end with coconut flakes. Next, pour the sweetened condensed milk until all the coconut is evenly covered and pop it into the oven.
Pro tip: These are best AFTER they’ve cooled. Especially if you are using the Butterfinger pieces, I’d highly recommend letting these come to room temperature. Honestly, they taste even better on day 2!

Hello Dolly Bars
Equipment
- 1 13×9 baking dish
Ingredients
- 1 stick butter, melted
- 2 cups crushed graham crackers
- 1 cup Butterfinger pieces (optional)
- 1 cup chocolate chips
- 2 cups unsweetened coconut flakes
- 1 can sweetened condensed milk
Instructions
- Mix together the melted butter and crushed graham crackers and place in a 13×9 pan.
- Spread chocolate chips over craters
- Cover with Butterfinger pieces (if using)
- Top with unsweetened coconut flakes
- Pour 3/4 of the can of sweetened condensed milk over everything until the coconut is completely covered.
- Bake at 350 °F for 25 minutes until the coconut is a golden brown.
